Knossos, located on the island of Crete, is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on the island and is considered Europe's oldest city. It served as the ceremonial and political center of the Minoan civilization, flourishing from around 2700 BCE to 1450 BCE. The site is renowned for its vast palace complex, featuring intricate frescoes, advanced plumbing, and a complex layout that inspired the myth of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth. Excavations, most famously by Sir Arthur Evans starting in 1900, have revealed a sophisticated culture with unique art, religion, and social structures, though much of Evans's reconstruction remains debated among scholars.
