Overview
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, responsible for biomedical and public health research. Established in 1887, it oversees 27 different institutes and centers, each focusing on a specific disease or aspect of health. The NIH funds a vast amount of research conducted at universities, medical schools, and other research institutions across the country and internationally. Its mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. The agency plays a critical role in advancing medical understanding, developing new treatments, and informing public health policy.
